What are cookies and how are they used?

Cookies are small files that are saved when accessing a website in the browser used by the device accessing the site online. Each subsequent access to the website, the browser sends this file to the server of the respective site, in order to allow the identification of a visitor who has returned to the site.

Cookies can store information that has personal character (for example, the visitor’s identification code, personalized preferences, or a history of visited pages). This information is not generated by cookies but by the visitor when they fill out online forms.

Although cookies are stored in the memory of the device used to access a site, they cannot access or read other information stored in that device. Cookies are not viruses; they are not compiled in the form of code and cannot be executed. Consequently, they cannot self-replicate, spread to other networks to generate certain actions, and cannot be used for the spread of viruses.

Based on duration, cookies can be either session or permanent:

  • Session cookies have a temporary storage duration, limited to the duration of the session in which a particular visitor accesses the site. When the session or browser is closed, all stored information is deleted.
